2009 Spring Training Update: 03-03-09

2009 World Series in November?

The 2009 World Series will be the 105th Fall Classic. And for the first time, a World Series game has been scheduled to be played in November.

This year's spring training season is running a bit longer than usual to accommodate the playing of the 2009 World Baseball Classic. As a result, Opening Day (or in this case, Opening Night) will be Sunday, April 5, a bit later than usual. That'll push the regular season and baseball playoffs back, so the 2009 World Series is scheduled to start Wednesday, October 28. At least one WS game will be played in November and perhaps several. Game 7 is scheduled for Nov. 5

Previously, baseball's only World Series to extend into November was in 2001, due to the calamitous events of 9/11. That year, the D-Backs edged the Yankees in Game 7 on November 4.

In 1989 the World Series was interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco and continued only after a 10-day delay. Still, since that "Bay Bridge Series" had commenced October 14, it was able to end in October, on the 28th.

Last year the Series started on Oct. 22. With the Phillies leading the Rays three games to one, Game 5 started on October 27 in Philadelphia. After the top of the sixth inning, the game was suspended due to rain and water on the field. It was resumed two days later, Oct. 29, with the home team winning the game and the championship.
